Sustainable Projects – Water & Sanitation

“Poverty is not natural.  It is manmade and it can be overcome and eradicated by actions of human beings.  Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great.  YOU can be that great generation.  Let your greatness blossom.”

Sustainable Initiative: Food Security, Water Harvesting and Solar Energy

As part of our Food Security program, Action Ireland Trust is supporting the cultivation of crops to provide Nutritional food for the 800 students and teachers attending Ha Hlalele High School. The Crops cooked in the school kitchens provide the students with a hot meal each day, with the surplus crop being sold at market to provide the school with additional disposable income for school equipment etc.

The installation of Rain Gutters throughout the school and the installation of a number of 20,000 litre Water Tanks, provide water to irrigate the planted areas, cooking and washing and running water to the newly installed student and staff toilet block, constructed by Action Ireland Trust.

With support from our partners, the installation of Solar Panels at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Roma, now provides the Hospital with all its hot water requirements and training of the hospital facility management team maintain the equipment.

Agriculture

The students and local community at Ha Hlalele successfully planted over 5 acres of potatoes and a range of vegetables, over 1,000 fruit trees have been planted, we introduced beekeeping, a chicken coop and piggery.  This initiative is supported by Country Crest,  who sent out Agricultural advisors to assist in the project.  In 2019 Country Crest brought 3 farmers to Ireland during the potato planting season in March, the initiative was to impart skills for better crop production.
